Kitchen up with trends
This year, 6 houses - 2 in Glendale - are on the tour, which is financed by the Yankee Society of Interior Designers, Pasadena Chapter. The nonprofit is made of members who are qualified in interior design by education, testing and experience. The total gross from last year's tour was more than $100,000, Reed asserted. The 2 Glendale houses are a 1932 Spanish house designed by designer Richard Kemp, featuring designs by society member Marlene Oliphant of Marlene Oliphant Interiors, and a 1948 Georgian Colonial, with interior upgrades by society member Melinda Schmidt of Fremdling Design Group LLC. Oliphant received the award in the House class. Oliphant coordinated the transform of the kitchen and 2 baths, and updated the leftover rooms with paint, upholstery and drapery, Oliphant declared. The homeowner, Diana Walker, was born in New Mexico and collects jewel-toned pottery by Bauer, Catalina and Roseville.
The kitchen's color scheme of teal, sapphire blue and yellow-gold were impressed by her fave painting by Alberto Vargas. "I believe the house has a large amount of charm and personality, and that's why I entered into the Kitchen Home Tour.". The designer was patient and asked homeowner Hiker lots of questions, Hiker claimed, helping her to choose precisely what she wanted. "I wished to keep the integrity of the 1930 Spanish house, and Marlene was really instrumental in letting me do that," Hiker claimed. "I also think that one of her best abilities was using color and putting the planning of the tiles together. She put this puzzle together, which blew me away. She's got a good way with colors.". Oliphant's design of Burbank customer Laura Snow was on the Church Emanu El home tour early on in the year. The girls do their homework in here.". "we probably did this because we needed to create a formal black-tie kitchen so you have dark granite counter tops with light cabinets,"she claimed.
